Security Concerns Not to Stop S. Korea, Lebanon World Cup Qualifier

South Korea’s governing football body says the national team will compete in its World Cup qualifier in Lebanon next week despite security concerns there.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said Friday that South Korea will take on Lebanon in Beirut on Tuesday in the final round of Group A Asia qualification play for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The KFA said earlier in the day that its chief Chung Mong-gyu was in discussions with FIFA officials over “ensuring security” during the national team’s trip to Lebanon.

The KFA later issued a statement explaining FIFA chose to keep the match in Lebanon and offered to provide security for both teams.

As the South Korean team prepares to fly to Lebanon from Dubai where it has been training, the security situation in Lebanon remains questionable apparently due to neighbor Syria’s prolonged civil war. As recently as this week, Lebanese border villages have been hit by missiles from Syria. Concerns are also escalating over Lebanese militant group Hezbollah’s emerging presence in the conflict.
