North Korea has proposed working-level government talks between Seoul and Pyongyang.
The Committee for Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland of Korea Thursday that it proposes inter-Korean talks on a wide range of issues including the reopening of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex and Mt. Geumgang tours.
The committee said in a statement that the South can decide the venue and the date of the talks at its convenience. It said that Pyongyang is also willing to discuss the issue of separated families at the meeting.
The statement also suggested that the two Koreas celebrate the 41st anniversary of the July 4th Joint Statement with the participation of government officials from both sides.
Pyongyang said if Seoul accepts the proposal for talks, it will reestablish the communication channels including the one through the truce village of Panmunjeom.
The statement urged South Korea to seize the opportunity to build trust and improve inter-Korean relations by accepting the proposal.
Shortly after the North’s statement, the South Korean government expressed a positive view on the proposal of talks.
The Ministry of Unification said that it hopes the government level talks proposed by Pyongyang will serve as an opportunity to build trust between the two Koreas.
The ministry added that it will announce the date and details of the agenda later on.
