Political parties have welcomed the resumption of inter-Korean governmental talks and say they hope the dialogue will ease Korean Peninsula tensions.
Ruling Saenuri Party Floor Leader Choi Kyoung-hwan said during a meeting of the party's key officials Friday that the resumption of dialogue will hopefully kick-start the inter-Korean trust building process pursued by the Park Geun-hye administration.
He stressed that North Korea sincerely engage in negotiations, saying the envisioned talks shouldn't be aimed at just running out the clock as in the past.
Saenuri Party chief policy-maker Kim Gi-hyeon claimed the Park administration maintained its principles as it proposed talks and its efforts finally paid off. He added the recent repatriation of the nine North Korean escapees from Laos should also be addressed when the two sides meet.
Main opposition Democratic Party Chairman Kim Han-gil also sounded a positive note during his party's Supreme Council meeting. He expressed hope that inter-Korean talks would be the first new step that eventually leads to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of a peace regime.
Democratic Party Representative Moon Jae-in, who was in charge of North Korea policies under previous governments, Rep. Park Jie-won, and former Unification Ministers Lee Jae-jung and Lim Dong-won met Friday morning and also highly assessed the current administration's policy on North Korea.
