The war diary written by Admiral Yi Sun-shin of the Joseon Dynasty will likely be accepted to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register list.
The Cultural Heritage Administration in Seoul said Monday that it received a preliminary recommendation for the inclusion of “Nanjung Ilgi” in the list, ahead of a meeting of UNESCO’s International Advisory Committee opening in Korea’s Gwangju on June 18th.
The administration explained that the addition of the famed Joseon Dynasty admiral’s war diary is quite likely, noting that the advisory committee’s recommendations have rarely been reversed, although the UNESCO director-general makes final decisions.
The advisory committee asked South Korea to present more examples of other countries that support its request to include documents relating to the Korean "Saemaeul or New Community Movement" in the world memory register.
South Korea currently has nine heritage items on the memory register including "hunminjeongeum," the original manuscript of the Korean alphabet hangeul, and the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.
Two-hundred-38 items from 96 countries are on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register list.
