Washington: US-N. Korea Dialogue Separate from Inter-Korean Talks

The U.S. government has reiterated its principle that dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea is possible only when Pyongyang takes action to keep its denuclearization promises.

Asked if the latest development in inter-Korean relations indicates the possibility of U.S.-North Korea dialogue, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a regular news briefing that they are slightly separate issues.

The spokeswoman stressed the U.S. has made it clear that Washington is always open to improved relations with Pyongyang if the regime is willing to make clear actions to live up to international obligations and commitments.

She welcomed the news that the two Koreas agreed to hold talks on the Gaeseong Industrial Complex and other issues. Psaki added that the U.S. supports and has always supported improved inter-Korean relations, and will continue its close coordination with allies and partners in the region. The spokeswoman said that Washington will monitor the situation closely.
