S. Korea Earns 8th Consecutive Berth in World Cup

South Korea earned a berth in the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday despite a bitter 1-0 loss to Iran.

The national team advanced to play in Brazil next year with 14 points, finishing second in Group A qualification play.

Iran scored 15 minutes into the second half and held South Korea scoreless the rest of the game.

South Korea tied Uzbekistan for points at 14, but goal differential locked South Korea into second place for an automatic qualification to the World Cup.

This is South Korea’s eighth consecutive advancement to the World Cup since 1986.
