U.N. Report Bolsters U.S. Case, but Inspectors Want More Time

Hans Blix, U-N chief weapons inspector in Iraq, says Iraq has failed to genuinely accept U-N resolutions demanding its disarmament. However, Blix was quick to add that Iraq had overall provided cooperation in the activities of the inspection team. Blix, who has been leading the inspection team in Iraq for the past two months, reported its findings at a meeting of the U-N Security Council on Monday. He said that there were signs that Iraq had produced more anthrax than it had admitted to, adding that inspectors have also discovered a mustard gas precursor during recent inspections. He said Iraq failed to provide inspectors evidence supporting claims that they indeed had destroyed their weapons, such as the deadly nerve agent VX and 300 Scud-type missiles. Mohamed ElBaradei, the head of the U-N nuclear control agency, said nuclear inspections of more than 100 sites turned up no evidence so far that Iraq is reviving its nuclear program. ElBaradei urged the Council for more time to carry out inspections, stressing that the next few months would be a valuable investment in peace because it could help avoid a war.
