North Approves S. Korean Businesses to Visit Gaeseong Factory Park

North Korea says it will allow South Korean company representatives to visit the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

Seoul's Unification Ministry said the North gave notification of its approval for the cross-border travel at 5 p.m. on Wednesday through the two Koreas' liaison officers at the truce village of Panmunjeom.

The latest move is in response to 46 South Korean tech firms' demand on Wednesday that the government allow them to remove their humidity-sensitive machinery at the complex.

Operations have been suspended at Gaeseong for months now, and South Korean firms have made continued calls for at least allowing their representatives to visit the North and inspect facility conditions.

The North said in its message on Wednesday that it will allow cross-border travel for South Korean businesses to take protective measures on their production facilities amid the current monsoon season. It also promised to provide necessary accommodation if the South Korean firms provide details about their visit.

The North added South Korean officials of the Gaeseong Industrial District Management Committee may also visit the factory park to hold consultations with their North Korean counterpart.

The message was delivered to the committee and the South Korean Corporate Association of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
