Koreas to Meet Monday for 5th Gaeseong Talks

South and North Korea will meet in Gaeseong on Monday for a fifth round of working-level talks on normalizing operations of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

During the latest talks Wednesday, the two sides failed to narrow differences over ways to prevent another shutdown of operations at the joint venture, agreeing only to more talks.

The South’s chief delegate, Kim Ki-woong, told reporters after Wednesday’s meeting that North Korea failed to show progress in its stance over measures to prevent future shutdowns. Kim added that the two Koreas were also at wide odds over providing institutional guarantees to protect the safety and property rights of South Koreans investing and working in the industrial park.

The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency said South Korea was dishonest and insincere in the talks and created artificial hurdles to settling the issues. It added the South only insisted on pushing blame for the crisis at Gaeseong and asking for unilateral assurances against another shutdown.
