RFA: N. Korean University Launches Law, Finance Courses

Radio Free Asia reports Pyongyang University of Science and Technology established new courses on economic law and finance law during the spring semester.

The U.S.-based broadcaster said economic law professor at the university, Kim Jae-yeon, said the courses were set up since North Korea needs knowledge of international trade in addition to finance and business administration if it wants to globalize.

Kim added the university plans to begin a patent law course in September that would deal with intellectual property rights.

Pyongyang University of Science and Technology opened in 2010 and is the only private university in North Korea. It was established jointly by South Korea's Northeast Asia Foundation for Education and Culture and the North’s Education Ministry.

Some 300 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students are attending the university, which provides classes in English.
