Seoul Pushes Bill to Boost Proper Use of Korean Language

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is pushing a bill to enhance the use of the Korean language.

The metropolitan government and the Seoul Metropolitan Council's culture committee drafted a bill in which they agreed to establish a basic plan on advancing the Korean language every five years.

The bill calls for the creation of a committee on proper Korean language use, particularly usage in the name and titles of major city policy measures and projects.

Authorities will also survey Korean language in advertisements, designate a Korean language superintendent, and hold events to make October ninth a day to celebrate “Hangeul,” the Korean alphabet.

Seoul City will hold a public hearing on the bill Tuesday to review it with citizens and experts.
