Pres. Park Hopes 2 Koreas Reach Sustainable Deal on Gaeseong

President Park Geun-hye hopes the two Koreas reach a meaningful, sustainable agreement on the normalization of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex at the ongoing fifth round of working-level talks.

Park told her senior secretaries on Monday that although the focus of the negotiations is the normalization of the inter-Korean joint venture, the talks must also serve to build a new framework of future inter-Korean relations.

She urged Pyongyang to promise to prevent another shutdown of the factory park, stressing that both Koreas would benefit from putting legal systems in place consistent with international standards and the creation of a reassuring investment environment.

The president asked the government to help South Korean companies with factories in Gaeseong to find markets for their products brought back from the complex. The retrieval of finished goods and raw materials from Gaeseong was completed last week.
