Seoul's Unification Ministry has urged North Korea to change its stance following failed negotiations to normalize the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
A Unification Ministry official told reporters Tuesday that South Korea won’t change its position and suggested that North Korea's sincerity is the key to restarting the factory park.
The official said Seoul has consistently demanded that the North provide measures to prevent the future suspension of the factory park and adopt international rules for the joint venture to gain competitiveness.
The official said the South has remained calm and steadfast in its position since the first round of dialogue. Ahead of the upcoming sixth round of working-level talks, the official said Seoul wouldn’t change its negotiation tactics now even on the occasion of a political event.
Regarding South Korea's expectations for an inter-Korean agreement on the Gaeseong issue, the official said the government is only seeking common sense and international norms through the envisioned accord.
On reports that some progress was made on South Korea's call to globalize the Gaeseong complex, the official said the North did not explicitly object to globalization but it's hard to say anything definitive about Pyongyang's position.
