Gov't Seeks Revision to Revoke Int'l Middle Schools' Permits

The Education Ministry will seek to revise a law to revoke the permit of international middle schools any time irregularities are discovered.

A permit can only currently be revoked after educational superintendents conduct assessments on the schools’ performance and management every five years.

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education reaffirmed that it cannot immediately revoke the permit of Younghoon International Middle School, where faculty members were recently convicted of corruption for fraudulent admissions.

The office noted it will make a decision on the school after the revision is completed.

President Park Geun-hye said earlier Tuesday a system needs to be created to allow the government to strip international schools of their status if they deviate from their purpose of establishment.
