South Korea has offered North Korea one last chance to discuss normalizing the suspended Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
The Unification Ministry said it made its final offer for talks Monday morning but didn’t propose a date or venue for the negotiations. The ministry did say the formation of the envisioned meeting would not be different from the past.
Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae said Sunday that Seoul has no choice but to make a final offer to prevent South Korean firms at the complex from suffering anymore physical or mental damage.
Ryoo said the proposal for another meeting is an extension of the six previous working-level negotiations on the inter-Korean factory park.
The minister said the government hopes Pyongyang responds with a clear answer to Seoul’s call for the prevention of future shutdowns, stressing the government is committed to advancing inter-Korean relations.
He added Gaeseong operations should not be suspended for political or military reasons and free corporate activities must be guaranteed under international standards.
Ryoo also said the South will continue humanitarian aid to vulnerable North Koreans including infants, regardless of politics. He said that the government will approve aid provision to the North by five South Korean civic groups on Monday. The government will also carry out projects for North Korean infants through the UN Children's Fund or UNICEF.
