Snowpiercer Breaking Records at Korean Box Office

Anchor: South Koreans are flocking to the theater to see Director Bong Joon-ho's "Snowpiercer." Bong's English-language film debut sold millions of tickets in its first week at home and is receiving high praise overseas.
Our Kim Soyon has more on the film’s success.

Report: Snowpiercer’s momentum has been unmatched at the Korean box office and is also drawing rave reviews aboard.

The sci-fi thriller about a train and its passengers perpetually circling the earth after it enters an ice age had sold a record four-point-five million tickets on Wednesday, just eight days after its release.

This is two days faster than Bong's previous blockbuster "The Host" and a day faster than "The Thieves," which went on to top ten million in ticket sales. Hollywood flicks "Iron Man 3" and "Transformers 3" took eight days to draw four million moviegoers.

Foreign critics have been positive about Snowpiercer starring top Korean actor Song Kang-ho and international stars Tilda Swinton, Chris Evans and Ed Harris.

The North American movie portal twitchfilm.com says director Bong created with Snowpiercer the most accomplished overseas work of any Korean filmmaker to-date.

U.S. entertainment weekly Variety forecast Snowpiercer to outperform director Bong's previous 2006 box office champ The Host at home in Korea.

Overall, film buffs have praised Snowpiercer, despite some complaints about the movie's fast pace, violence scenes and dark tone. Some also complained that the computer graphics in the 40 million-dollar movie weren't very impressive.

Distributor CJ E&M Corp. said the movie was sold to 167 countries, and foreign distributors will decide on a release date in their countries as they follow the films popularity in South Korea.

Another Korean thriller, "The Terror Live," drew two million viewers in six days and is chasing Snowpiercer at the box office. But it’s unlikely to match Snowpiercer’s ticket sales at home and there is no other competition at the time that will take over at the top.
