The South Korean government is preparing for a new round of inter-Korean talks on reopening the suspended Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
To discuss Seoul's strategies ahead of the talks, Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae returned to work on Wednesday midway through his summer vacation and convened a meeting of senior ministry officials.
The South Korean government on Thursday officially notified North Korea the talks will take place next Wednesday at the factory park as it suggested.
A government official told reporters Seoul will do its best to come up with a reasonable solution for the constructive normalization of the stalled inter-Korean joint venture.
But the government will continue paying its insurance coverage for the firms whose operations have been halted at the factory park.
An official explained the insurance is a separate issue from the talks and denied speculations the payment is Seoul's first steps to carry on with what it called a “grave decision” regarding the Gaeseong park.
The official added some of the companies said they will decide on whether to receive insurance benefits after seeing the results of the seventh round of talks.
The payment of insurance began at the Export-Import Bank of Korea Thursday morning.
