DP: Gaeseong Normalization Best Solution to Thaw Inter-Korean Ties

The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) says the normalization of the suspended Gaeseong Industrial Complex is the best solution to thaw icy inter-Korean relations.

On Thursday, DP Floor Leader Jun Byung-hun called on the two Koreas to agree on the normalization of the factory park at next Wednesday's talks. He said both sides should take flexible attitudes and strategies.

DP Supreme Council member Rep. Yang Seung-jo stressed operations of the Gaeseong park should resume as soon as possible. Yang said the inter-Korean complex had never shut down before, even when North Korea strained relations by torpedoing a South Korean naval vessel and shelling the border island of Yeonpyeong.

DP Rep. Park Ji-won, who chairs a special parliamentary committee on inter-Korean relations, said on a radio program the South Korean government should be more generous and embrace North Korea in the seventh round of talks.

Park said North Korea has always pursued brinkmanship diplomacy, but it saved Seoul face by accepting the South’s final offer for dialogue. He said the government should not demand more from Pyongyang at the upcoming talks.
