Seoul Urges Pyongyang to Abandon Nuclear Program

South Korea has called on North Korea to abandon its nuclear program in compliance with the demand of the international community.

Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-seok made the remark at a briefing on Friday. His comment comes after the U.S. Institute for Science and International Security released a report earlier in the week saying the North doubled the floor space of a uranium enrichment plant at its Yongbyon nuclear complex.

Kim said UN Security Council sanctions, possible talks between the U.S. and North Korea, and the six-party talks all relate to nuclear weapons development, and the North should meet international community's demand.

Turning to the suspended Gaeseong Industrial Complex issue, the spokesman expressed hope the two Koreas come up with a reasonable solution at talks next Wednesday. Kim added Seoul's Unification Minister called for a sincere change in the North's attitude when he announced South Korea's final offer for talks on the Gaeseong issue.

As for insurance payments the government authorized for South Korean firms based at the inter-Korean complex, Kim said two firms have received payments and five more will also receive money from the Export Import Bank of Korea. The remaining companies are waiting to see how next week's inter-Korean talks pan out.
