National Treasure No. 83 To be Shown at Met in New York

The Cultural Heritage Administration has reversed its previous decision and allowed a national treasure sculpture to be displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York later this year.

The administration said on Friday it agreed to display the 7th-century ‘Gilt-bronze Pensive Maitreya Bodhisattva’ at the Met’s “Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom’’ exhibition. The display will be viewable to the public from October 29th to February 23rd.

The administration previously disapproved sending the sculpture, National Treasure No. 83, for the exhibition, saying the artifact was abroad for about three thousand days for eight displays.

The administration, however, reversed its decision just eleven days later.

It said approval came after persuasion by the national museum and the Met while the Culture Ministry acted as an arbiter.
