The South Korean government will soon begin discussions with North Korea on the formation of a joint inter-Korean committee in charge of implementing the agreed normalization of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
In a briefing Friday, Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk said South Korea has drafted its version of a written agreement on normalization of the industrial park, which is under final review by the government. He said that as soon as it's done, talks with North Korea on forming the joint committee will begin, most likely from early next week.
In regards to deciding the rank of the committee chairmen, the spokesman said precedents in other countries will be referred to but it will be decided as fitting to Korean terms.
Kim said the joint committee can be viewed as a consultation channel between the two Korean governments and an extension of the seven rounds of inter-Korean negotiations held on the Gaeseong issue.
His remarks are interpreted as hinting that the committee heads will be determined along the lines of working-level chief delegates who were Kim Ki-woong from the South's Unification Ministry and Pak Chol-su from the North.
On resuming South Korean tours to the North's Mount Geumgang, spokesman Kim said nothing particular has been decided on that issue.
