The 2013 Special Olympics Korea Summer Games will open on Wednesday at the Suwon Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province.

The three-day event for people with intellectual disabilities is a local version of the Special Olympics World Games.

About 14-hundred athletes from 16 cities and provinces nationwide will compete in ten events, including track and field, swimming, soccer, badminton and weightlifting.

Chairman of the organizing committee of the Special Olympic Korea Na Kyung-won expressed hope the games will be as successful as the 2013 Pyeongchang Special Olympics World Winter Games.

All athletes receive medals or ribbons in the games, which value participation itself rather than the outcome of competition.
