Red Cross Chief Confirms North's Will to Resolve Humanitarian Issues

The chief of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says North Korean authorities have the will to resolve humanitarian issues such as reunions of separated families.

Peter Maurer, the president of the Geneva-based humanitarian institution, recently visited North Korea but did not elaborate Monday on the details of his meeting with North Korea’s parliamentary leader, Kim Yong-nam.

Maurer made the comments during a visit to South Korea's Red Cross. He only said he discussed various humanitarian issues.

At the Red Cross, Mauer toured video conferencing venues and the office dealing with separated families. He said he was deeply impressed by the facilities and hoped more families will be reunited.

Seoul’s Red Cross awarded Maurer the Order of Mugunghwa, its highest medal of merit.
