KBS and the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) jointly hosted the Global News Forum 2013 in Seoul on Thursday.

Some 300 representatives from international broadcasting companies and social media organizations discussed the future role and directions of public broadcasters in the face of the explosive growth of online news outlets.

Controller of English for BBC Global News Richard Porter explained the British broadcaster created a new company called “BBC Global News” last year by merging BBC World News and the international version of the BBC news Web site. The aim was to attract people who read news on the Internet or their mobile devices.

“Storyful,” a news agency that provides items deemed news-worthy from individuals’ social network service pages to media companies, was introduced at the forum as an example of a new type of news agency in the era of social media.

The forum was broadcast in real time via the Internet and branded a "smart conference."
