Fortress Inspected for Inclusion on UNESCO World Heritage List

A mountain fortress southeast of Seoul has been inspected for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Cultural Heritage Administration in Seoul says the UNESCO International Council on Monuments and Sites conducted a five-day survey at Namhansanseong fortress from Sunday to assess its value as a heritage site and condition of preservation. The administration says the council also listened to local residents' opinions in the process.

The council's inspection of a candidate site is an important step in determining UNESCO designation. The decision will be made at the 38th World Heritage Committee meeting opening next June in Qatar.
