Wrestling has been reinstated for the 2020 summer Olympics after being dropped from the games seven months ago.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted on Sunday, local time, to return wrestling to the 2020 games at its 125th general assembly in Argentina.
Wrestling was excluded from the list of 25 core sports during the IOC executive board meeting in February.
Koreans have competed strongly in wrestling in past summer Olympics, winning eleven gold, eleven silver and 13 bronze medals.
Exclusion from the core sports roster dealt a blow to Korean wrestling as witnessed in a drop in the number of registered athletes and cancellation of new teams. But the IOC's vote Sunday should help breathe life back into the sport.
Baseball and softball also lost their official spots after the 2008 Beijing games. The two sports, through a merger, tried to get back on the program, but the endeavor lost momentum as U.S. Major League Baseball remained passive and didn't fully support the move.
