South Korean businesses of now-suspended inter-Korean economic cooperation have welcomed news of the two Koreas' agreement to resume operation of the Gaeseong Industrial Complex from Monday.
Chung Yang-geun, the chief of a civic committee of company heads involved in the cross-border business project, said he's pleased the complex will be running again after five months. Chung said the factory zone represents a critical part in inter-Korean relations.
He also took the opportunity to call the government's attention to other South Korean firms whose business with the North was suspended. He cited the sanction Seoul put in place in May 2010 on inter-Korean exchange following North Korea's torpedoing of a South Korean Navy vessel.
South Korean firms that invested in the tour program to the North's Mount Geumgang resort have also expressed hope the reopening of Gaeseong will lead to talks on restarting Geumgang tours. An official from an association of Geumgang tourism-related companies said the government needs to take active steps to resume the tours in a way to boost the domestic service sector.
