South Korea’s national flag Taegeukgi has been raised and its national anthem has been played in an official event in North Korea for the first time.

South Korea’s Kim Woo-sik and Lee Young-gyun on Saturday ranked first and second in the men’s 85-kilogram category at the 2013 Asian Cup and Interclub Weightlifting Championship in Pyeongyang.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Sunday aired recorded video of the games and showed South Korean weightlifters on the podium in the award ceremony.

In the opening ceremony on Thursday, South Korea’s Koo Won-seo entered a Pyongyang stadium flying the Taegeukgi.

South Korean athletes competed in sporting events held in North Korea a few times, but it is the first for South Korean players to fly the national flag and compete under the official name “Republic of Korea, KOR.”
