Taekwondo Federations Seek Cross-competition for Athletes

The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and the North Korea-led International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) are seeking to allow their member athletes to compete in events organized by the other federation.

The president of the World Taekwondo Federation, South Korean Choue Chung-won, said Monday that participation in either federation will be allowed as long as the rules of both organizations are respected.

Choue said the two federations are discussing specific plans to realize the cross participation.

He recently met with the president of North Korea’s International Taekwondo Federation, Jang Wung, and discussed cross-participation in Argentina on the sidelines of the 125th General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The two sides are known to have met three times and formed a general consensus on the matter.

Choue said both sides could sign a memorandum of understanding as early as next month in Russia when the 2013 World Combat Games opens.

Currently, only World Taekwondo Federation athletes are permitted to participate in the Olympic Games.
