Pyeongyang Postpones Inter-Korean Family Reunions

North Korea has postponed inter-Korean family reunions scheduled for six days beginning on September 25 at the Mount Geumgang resort in North Korea.

The North’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland said Saturday that the family reunions will be put off until proper conditions for dialogue are met. The North Korean state mouthpiece claimed that the South Korean government is using inter-Korean talks to forge confrontation between the two Koreas.

The committee also postponed working-level talks for the resumption of the Mount Geumgang tours. Seoul had proposed the dialogue be held on October second. The committee denounced South Korea for insulting North Korea by calling the Mount Geumgang tours the North's "dollar box."

Pyeongyang's sudden announcement came as the two sides were fine-tuning details of accommodations for South Koreans who will visit the North to reunite with their long-lost kin.

Upon North Korea's announcement, the South Korean government denounced the postponement as inhumane and stressed that North Korea would gain nothing from such a move. Both the ruling Saenuri Party and the main opposition Democratic Party also issued a statement blasting the decision.
