The 94th National Sports Festival opened in Incheon on Friday.
The opening ceremony at Incheon Munhak Stadium began at 5 p.m. to welcome the roughly 30-thousand Korean athletes to the competition. The athletes have come from 17 cities in South Korea and abroad.
Olympian Yang Hak-seon will be competing in the games. Yang became the first South Korean to win gold in gymnastics at last summer’s London Olympics. Swimming champion Park Tae-hwan will also compete in the festival for the first time in five years.
Other events will be held on the sidelines of the festival.
The World Food Culture Fair opened on Friday at the stadium. Incheon’s famous Soreapogu seafood festival also opened, featuring various events such as a ritual for a big catch of fish and fireworks.
The Incheon Bupyeong Pungmul Festival, a traditional music festival, will be held in the Bupyeong area, while a national market fair will be held at Songdo Convensia.
