Gov't to Expand Recognition of Academic Records from Foreign Students

The government will now recognize the academic records of foreign children who come to South Korea when one of their parents marries a South Korean.

The Education Ministry said the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday approved a revision to that effect to enhance support for children from multicultural families.

Under the revision, the academic accreditation committee, which deliberates whether to officially recognize applicants' academic records, will expand the scope of review to children from multicultural families. Currently, only North Korean escapees are subject to the review.

The number of children from multicultural families stands at 55-thousand or zero-point-85 percent of total students this year. The number is growing by six thousand every year, while the total number of students is falling by 200-thousand per year.
