Seoul Demands Information on Alleged S. Korean Captive in the North

Seoul has demanded North Korea reveal the personal information of a South Korean who is said to be detained in the North.

Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Eui-do asked for the information in a news briefing on Monday, saying the North’s claim that it arrested a South Korean spy is groundless.

Kim also addressed media reports the South Korean is a pastor who crossed the border for missionary purposes. He said details have not been confirmed, and related agencies are working to identify the alleged captive.

The spokesman stressed the South Korean government will sternly deal with North Korea’s provocations, and he urged Pyongyang to stop threatening to physically harm South Koreans.

Last week, Pyongyang threatened to take out the head of South Korea’s National Intelligence Service for organizing the kidnapping of North Koreans and attempting to undermine the sovereignty of the North.
