Jogye Order Assessing Condition of Tripitaka Koreana

South Korea’s largest Buddhist order is investigating the condition of the Tripitaka Koreana, a 13-century collection of Buddhist scriptures carved onto wood blocks.

The Jogye Order said on Wednesday it will examine the condition of all 80-thousand wooden blocks through consultation with the Cultural Heritage Administration. The blocks are kept in Haein Temple in South Gyeongsang Province.

The Cultural Heritage Administration says it will hold a meeting of experts on Friday to assess damage and plan for repairs.

KBS said on Tuesday that about ten thousand woodblocks have been damaged to various degrees and measures need to be taken to preserve them.
