Gov't Denies Request to Light Christmas Tower Near Border

This year a tower on Aegibong Peak near the inter-Korean border will not be decorated with Christmas lights.

The Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday it rejected a request by a church to decorate the tower at Aegibong Peak.

The ministry apparently made such a decision as it believes there is no need to unnecessarily irritate North Korea when tensions are running high on the Korean Peninsula.

The first time Christmas lights were lit on Aegibong Peak was in 1954. The North has denounced the the lights, saying they are a form of propaganda warfare.
