S. Korea to Host 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup

South Korea has been selected to host the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

FIFA named South Korea the host country on Wednesday, local time, in Brazil at its executive committee meeting.

The U-20 World Cup is the only major FIFA event South Korea has not held. It hosted the 2001 Confederations Cup, the 2002 World Cup and the 2007 U-17 World Cup.

A South Korean host city has not been selected yet, but ten are in the running including Seoul, Daejeon, Suwon and Pohang.

Around 800 soccer players and around one-thousand staff from 24 countries will come for the U-20 World Cup.

FIFA apparently selected South Korea for its experience hosting major international competitions including the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The government’s support and the Korea Football Association’s active bidding are also considered contributing factors to FIFA’s choice.
