North Korea held a massive memorial service on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of former leader Kim Jong-il's death.
North Korean news outlets broadcast the service live from an auditorium in Pyongyang.
The most powerful figures in North Korea sat on a stage at the front of the auditorium, including leader Kim Jong-un, parliamentary chief Kim Yong-nam, director of the Korean People’s Army General Political Bureau Choe Ryong-hae, Minister of the People’s Armed Forces Jang Jong-nam and the chief of the KPA General Staff Gen. Ri Yong-gil.
Minister of State Security Kim Won-hong and a senior Workers’ Party member, Jo Yon-jun, were also seen sitting on the stage, which is reserved for the highest-ranking party and military officials.
Kim Kyung-hui, the aunt of Kim Jong-un and wife of the recently executed Jang Song-thaek, did not attend the service.
Kim Jong-un's wife, Ri Sol-ju, did not attend this year's or last year's service. However, Ri later accompanied Kim on Tuesday to pay respects to the former leaders of North Korea at the Geumsusan Memorial Palace.
It was the first time North Korean media have reported a public appearance by Ri in two months.
