Korea Seeks UNESCO Designation of Jeju 'Haenyeo' Culture

The government says it will submit Jeju Island's "haenyeo" culture for UNESCO designation on the list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The Cultural Heritage Administration says the haenyeo culture is a leading intangible Korean heritage representative of Jeju. Haenyeo are women shellfish divers unique to the South Korean island.

The application for designation will list several intangible properties of the culture, such as the divers' underwater skills, their extensive experience and knowledge on adjusting to the marine environment, and details of their community, customs and practice.

UNESCO will decide on the designation in late 2015.
