Anchor: South Korea reported 386 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, remaining in the 300 range for the second straight day. Despite the signs the third wave of the infection in the nation may be finally easing two months after it started, health authorities are warning against complacency.

Report: The daily COVID-19 figure in South Korea stayed in the 300s for two days straight for the first time in about eight weeks, a sign that the third wave of the epidemic is slowing down.

On Tuesday, South Korea added 386 additional COVID-19 cases, raising the country's accumulated caseload to 73-thousand-115.

Since reaching a peak of one-thousand-240 on December 25, the number of new infections has been gradually decreasing.

Of the new infections detected throughout Monday, 351 were local transmissions, while 35 were imported. Some 241 cases were in the capital region, including 95 in Seoul.

The latest development comes a day before the country marks the first anniversary of the outbreak. The first positive case in the nation, a Chinese woman from Wuhan, the initial epicenter of the pandemic, was reported on January 20 last year.

Despite some positive signs, however, senior health official Son Young-rae warned that the virus could spread again if people let their guard down and disregard quarantine guidelines.

The country recently extended tougher social distancing measures for two more weeks, while easing some restrictions on cafes, gyms and other indoor facilities that have suffered losses.

The government says it is making every effort to keep the quarantine momentum going ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday next month, as it is preparing for a national vaccination program set to begin within weeks.

With the aim to achieve herd immunity by November, the government says it’s not taking any chances in the initiative to avoid another wave of infections.
