Heavy Downpours, Strong Winds in Forecast as Typhoon Omais Approaches

Heavy downpours and strong winds are forecast for southern coastal regions, as Typhoon Omais, the 12th typhoon of the year, is expected to land on the Korean peninsula late Monday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) said as of 9:00 a.m., Omais was traveling northeast at 31 kilometers per hour from waters 500 kilometers southwest of Jeju Island's Seogwipo. The typhoon's maximum wind speed was 76 kilometers per hour.

Up to 300 millimeters of rain are expected for most southern regions and Jeju Island from Monday to Tuesday, while up to 150 millimeters are forecast in central areas and islands in the West Sea.

Downpours of more than 70 millimeters per hour, coupled by winds of up to 65 kilometers per hour, may hit southern regions and Jeju Island.

After making landfall around 12:00 a.m. Tuesday, the typhoon is expected to weaken to an extratropical cyclone.
