Former President Yoon Suk Yeol argued at a bail hearing on Friday that it is too difficult to attend multiple trials and undergo special counsel questioning while in detention.

Speaking for 18 minutes at the Seoul Central District Court, Yoon said surviving in a small cell was already challenging and that facing up to five hearings a week, along with additional summonses, was physically demanding.

He stressed he was not refusing to appear in court, noting that he had complied faithfully with legal procedures while free, and suggested that his current confinement carried “a degree of unconstitutionality.”

Calling his indictment “ridiculous,” Yoon said presidents are meant to be afforded certain discretion while in office.

The former president's current trials concern his declaration of martial law on December 3 as well as foreign exchange conspiracy plots.
