Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has instructed the government to take action against xenophobic demonstrations, saying South Korea must ensure that no foreigner feels unsafe or unwelcome.

At a meeting of ministers regarding public safety on Tuesday, Kim said discrimination and hate speech targeting foreigners damage the nation’s reputation at a time when it is enjoying global attention.

He also voiced concern that ongoing anti-China rallies are spreading fear among visitors and hurting small business owners, calling them “self-destructive acts.”

With the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit set to take place in Gyeongju later this month, Kim urged authorities to strictly enforce bans on acts inciting hatred and discrimination.

He added that while freedom of expression must be respected, it should be exercised responsibly and not infringe on the rights or safety of others.
