Experts predict that an eruption from dormant Mount Baekdu on a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) level of seven would be more than one-thousand times as powerful as the eruption in Iceland last year.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said following such a blast, estimates should the lava flow would spread within a 15-kilometer radius and volcanic ash would spread some 180-kilometers. The administration says North Korea and China would be directed effected.
The indirect effects to reach South Korea would result in an increased density of particulate matter in the air and disrupted flight schedules.
Experts predict that even an explosion under a VEI of two would send particulate matter to South Korea at a density similar to a dust storm prompting the issue of an advisory.
The administration said it would share and discuss data on Mount Baekdu in a meeting with China for bilateral collaboration on seismology in early November.
