US, China Spar over Doha Round at WTO Conference

The U.S. and China have again clashed head-on in a meeting of the World Trade Organization.

In the WTO’s Eighth Ministerial Conference that opened in Geneva on Thursday, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming blamed each other country for the deadlocked negotiations on the Doha Round.

Kirk said the rise of China as a trade powerhouse has hampered efforts to conclude the Doha deal, which was designed to help developing countries. The Chinese commerce minister contended that the talks have been held up by U.S. politics and could resume once congressional and presidential elections wrap up next year.

The two nations are involved in a fierce trade dispute that escalated further following China’s decision to slap antidumping tariffs on large cars and sport-utility vehicles from the U.S.
