UN Chief Denounces Egyptian Military for Deadly Crackdown on Protesters

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is denouncing the Egyptian military for its deadly crackdown on antimilitary protesters.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, the UN chief voiced alarm about the reemergence of violence in Egypt. Ban urged the country’s interim authorities to take action that will guarantee the protection of human rights and civil liberties for all Egyptians, including the right to peaceful protest.

Ban stressed the importance of creating a favorable atmosphere for Egypt's upcoming parliamentary elections and its transition to democracy.

The Egyptian Health Ministry said at least ten people have been killed and 505 others injured in clashes between security forces and demonstrators that began last Friday.
