'Pyongyang Returning to Normalcy'

Members of a South Korean civic group that just left Pyongyang say the North Korean capital city is quickly being stabilized after the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.

Ten officials from the Korea NGO Council for Cooperation with North Korea on Tuesday morning arrived in Beijing on North Korea’s Air Koryo flight. They entered the North on Saturday without any knowledge of Kim’s death.

Park Hyun-seok, one of the members from the group, said that Pyongyang is mourning in general, but life is returning to normal and is calm.

He added that although flags were seen at half staff, there were no placards or chanting. Park also said that North Korean officials whom he worked with in Pyongyang seemed to have no idea about the leader’s death until the North’s state-run media announced it.
