The German government says a shipment of 69 surface-to-air missiles seized by Finnish authorities last week was a legitimate delivery from Germany to South Korea.
A spokesman for Germany’s Federal Ministry of Defense said Thursday that the impounded missiles were an official shipment that was fully declared and had gained all necessary clearings from German authorities.
The spokesman’s remarks came after Finnish authorities said they seized the missiles and 160 tons of explosives on the British-registered cargo ship, Thor Liberty, which docked in Kotka, southern Finland last Thursday. The ship was heading toward Shanghai.
The spokesman, who would not reveal his name in line with German government policies, said the patriot-guided missiles were taken out Germany’s defense force stocks and were on their way to South Korea.
The spokesman added that no explosives were included in the shipment and that he had no further information on the matter.
