U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell will make a stop in South Korea next week among other East Asian countries.
The U.S. State Department announced on Thursday that Campbell will be visiting China on Tuesday, South Korea on Wednesday and Japan on Friday.
The department said Campbell will meet with high-level officials and discuss recent situations regarding North Korea and Myanmar among other bilateral and regional issues. Campbell and the officials of the three countries are expected to review the situation in the region following North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s death and coordinate views on North Korea policies. They are also expected to discuss ways to resume a third round of high-level North Korea-U.S. talks and the stalled six-way nuclear talks.
In particular, the department said Campbell’s visit to China marks a vital opportunity for the U.S. to continue its cooperative partnership with China in the face of various global challenges.
