The United States has unveiled a new defense strategy that aims to strengthen its military presence in the Asia Pacific region.
U.S. President Barack Obama attended a ceremony unveiling the Defense Strategic Review at the Pentagon on Thursday and said the U.S. plans to cut the size of its military personnel. He said the cuts will be centered mainly on the Army and the Marine Corps.
Obama said though the U.S. military will be “leaner, the world must know the United States is going to maintain its military superiority with armed forces that are agile, flexible and ready for the full range of contingencies and threats.”
He added that the U.S. will be strengthening its presence in the Asia Pacific, and budget reductions will not come at the expense of that critical region.
The U.S. is expected to reveal the size of the personnel cuts around the end of this month. The Pentagon is reportedly planning to reduce Army personnel numbers from the current 570-thousand to roughly 490-thousand within ten years.
