Fukushima to Screen Locally Produced Rice for Cesium

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun says Fukushima Prefecture will screen all rice produced in the region for cesium.

The Japanese daily reported that the prefecture’s agricultural cooperative and other government agencies will screen rice produced over the coming fall season for any radioactive materials. The testing will be implemented from the shipping process.

Radioactive cesium was detected in rice harvested last fall at Fukushima, the site of Japan’s nuclear accident. The incident dealt a huge blow to farmers in the area.

The move to conduct screenings in Fukushima follows the prefecture’s decision that independent sampling tests alone are not enough to regain public trust for the region’s rice products.
